- the WHOLE
- the NUMBER OF groups
- the SIZE OF the groups
When multiplying we are trying to determine the WHOLE - also called the PRODUCT. We are usually given the NUMBER OF groups and the SIZE OF the groups, which are the FACTORS.
A multiplication equation (number sentence) is written as:
Number of Groups X Size of Groups = Whole
In an ARRAY:
Number of Groups is the ROWS
Size of the Groups is the COLUMNS
When dividing we already know the WHOLE - also called the DIVIDEND and we are trying to determine either the NUMBER OF groups or the SIZE OF the groups. It just depends on the information already given (DIVISOR) which may be either the number of groups or the size of the groups. The unknown is called the QUOTIENT (the answer to a division equation).
A division equation (number sentence) is written as:
Whole / Number of Groups OR Size of Groups =
Unknown (which is either the number of groups or the size of the groups)
Dividend / Divisor = Quotient
