Time and Number Lines

We are now working in Module 2 and have made a connection between the clock face and a number line.  A clock face is a number line that has been wrapped around a circle.

It has equal intervals (minutes, five minute and hour intervals), which we can show on number line too.

Division and Tape Diagrams

We have been practicing creating tape diagrams to represent division problems.  Remember that you are dividing when you have been given the whole and are breaking it down into smaller parts (either the number of groups or the size of the groups, depending on what you already know).

If you have been given the number of groups, then you can start with the empty rectangular tape diagram and break it into the given number of parts (groups).

If you have been given the size of the groups, then you need to build your tape diagram one piece at a time, like building with LEGOS.

Remember, as we have been learning concepts of multiplication and division, we have focused on identifying 3 things:

  • the WHOLE
  • the NUMBER OF groups
  • the SIZE OF the groups

When multiplying we are trying to determine the WHOLE - also called the PRODUCT.  We are usually given the NUMBER OF groups and the SIZE OF the groups, which are the FACTORS.

A multiplication equation (number sentence) is written as:

Number of Groups X Size of Groups = Whole

In an ARRAY:
Number of Groups is the ROWS
Size of the Groups is the COLUMNS

When dividing we already know the WHOLE - also called the DIVIDEND and we are trying to determine either the NUMBER OF groups or the SIZE OF the groups.  It just depends on the information already given (DIVISOR) which may be either the number of groups or the size of the groups.  The unknown is called the QUOTIENT (the answer to a division equation).

A division equation (number sentence) is written as:

Whole / Number of Groups OR Size of Groups =
Unknown (which is either the number of groups or the size of the groups)

Dividend / Divisor = Quotient
